The One Already There

When the moment came, he was ready.

Abundius lived in Rome in the 6th century. He served as a sacristan in the church of St. Peter, now known as St. Peter’s Basilica, taking care of the preparations for Mass. It was quiet work that most people would not notice, but it was done with consistency and faith.

He is remembered because Pope Gregory the Great wrote about him for the way he lived his role with devotion.

One traditional account about him remains.

A young woman had been paralyzed for a long time and could not walk. She moved by crawling and had been praying in the church of St. Peter, asking for healing. One night, she had a vision in which Saint Peter told her to find a man named Abundius, who would help her.

She did not know who he was. So she went into the church and began asking, looking for someone few people noticed.

When she found him, she said that Saint Peter had sent her.

Abundius did not hesitate. “If you have been sent, then stand.” He took her by the hand and lifted her.

She stood up, fully healed.

This is the only clear story we are given about Saint Abundius. Beyond this, little else is recorded.

Today, we often think we need to be noticed to be useful. But here, something else happens. The one who was needed was already there. He did not wait to be chosen. He was already doing his work, so when the moment came, he was ready for it.

Let’s keep learning the saints’ way—day by day.
