In 597, Augustine of Canterbury, a Benedictine monk from Rome, was sent by Pope Gregory on a mission to bring Christianity to England.
But during the journey, Augustine and the monks traveling with him heard frightening stories about the Anglo-Saxons. The place felt unfamiliar and dangerous to them. Instead of continuing, Augustine turned back and asked Pope Gregory for permission to quit.
Instead of allowing him to abandon the mission, Pope Gregory encouraged Augustine to continue the journey.
So Augustine returned to the road and crossed into England.
Years later, the same man who almost canceled the mission became the first Archbishop of Canterbury and helped shape the history of Christianity in England.
Today, many people quietly feel like giving up when something becomes harder than expected. In moments like that, faith and trust in God can help a person continue even when the future still feels uncertain.
Let’s keep learning the saints’ way—day by day.
