Some days, life gives us problems that can be fixed. A bill can be paid. A broken appliance can be repaired. A misunderstanding can be cleared up. We deal with them, move on, and get back to whatever we were doing.
But some things are not that simple.
A person we love becomes seriously ill. Someone loses a family member. A friend goes through a separation. A parent grows old and slowly loses the strength they once had. Someone loses a job and does not know when another opportunity will come. Sometimes the problem is our own, and sometimes we are simply watching someone we care about go through it.
Our instinct is often to look for a solution. We want to fix things because fixing feels useful. We give advice, suggest what to do next, search for answers, or try to say something that will make the person feel better.
But life does not always give us something to fix.
Not every burden can be removed. Some have to be carried. And when we cannot carry someone else’s burden for them, we can at least refuse to let them carry it alone.
