Global Action for a Cooler Planet

Small everyday actions can become part of something much larger when they are shared across communities and borders.

World Ozone Day • September 16

The planet is getting warmer, and the problem can feel too big for ordinary people to do anything about.

Years ago, scientists discovered that certain chemicals were damaging the ozone layer, which helps protect us from harmful rays from the sun.

Countries agreed to reduce and replace those chemicals.

Today, the ozone layer is on a long path to recovery.

Damage to the ozone layer and climate change are different problems, but both show why coordinated action matters.

Practical actions we can take include:

• Use less electricity when it is not needed.
• Avoid wasting food.
• Reuse things instead of replacing them too quickly.
• Walk, commute, carpool, or use public transport when practical.
• Maintain appliances so they last longer and use energy efficiently.
• Plant and protect trees.
• Support businesses, communities, and policies that reduce pollution and waste.

When millions of people make better choices, demand changes, businesses respond, and bigger changes become easier to support.

The ozone layer gives us a simple lesson: global problems can improve when people and countries act together.

We share one atmosphere. What goes into it does not check passports.

A cooler planet will come from practical actions done by many people, in many places.
