One of the most challenging ideas in Christianity is that no one is beyond God’s mercy. Even the darkest past can be forgiven.
But forgiveness does not erase consequences. A forgiven person may still face legal penalties, broken relationships, lost trust, or the lasting pain experienced by others. Forgiveness and consequences are different things.
We may notice changes in a person’s words and actions, but only God fully knows whether repentance is genuine.
That’s why it’s wise to avoid quick conclusions. We don’t have to assume that a person can never change, and we don’t have to pretend that forgiveness makes the past disappear. It is possible to recognize signs of change while still acknowledging the harm that was done.
The consequences of our choices often remain long after the moment has passed, like the last notes of a piano that linger after the hands leave the keys.
