John Vianney (1786-1859), better known as the Cure of Ars, was a parish priest who served the village of Ars, France, for more than forty years. He lived during a time when faith in post-Revolution France had grown weak. Though he struggled in his seminary studies, his compassion and tireless devotion to God’s people eventually made him one of the most beloved priests in Church history. He is now honored as the patron saint of parish priests.
A Struggling Student
John struggled greatly with Latin and repeatedly failed parts of his seminary studies. Many believed he would never become a priest. Yet he persevered, and his deep love for God carried him through.
I Look at Him
When asked how he prayed before the Blessed Sacrament, Father John gave a simple answer: “I look at Him, and He looks at me.” He did not speak of complicated methods. For him, prayer was simply being present with God.
The Confession Line
Pilgrims traveled from all over France to seek his guidance. On many days, he spent up to sixteen hours hearing confessions because he believed no soul should be turned away from God’s mercy.
Reading Hearts
Many repenters said Father John recognized sins they had forgotten or were too ashamed to confess. Whether through a special grace or remarkable spiritual insight, countless people left his confessional with renewed peace.
The Devil’s Noise
Father John often spoke of strange disturbances at night, which he believed came from the devil. Rather than being afraid, he would smile and say that whenever the devil made the most noise, it usually meant a great sinner would come to confession the next day.
Leaving Ars
Several times, Father John tried to leave Ars because he felt unworthy of serving its people. Each time, the villagers searched for him and brought him back. In the end, he accepted that God had called him to remain where he was.
