August: National Breastfeeding Awareness Month
The first months of life are important for every baby. Breastfeeding provides natural nutrients and antibodies that help protect babies while their bodies are still growing. But what happens as they get older?
| Breastfed | Not Breastfed |
|---|---|
| Receives antibodies from breast milk | Does not receive antibodies from breast milk |
| More protection from ear, chest, and stomach infections | May be more likely to get these infections, especially in the first year |
| Nutrition naturally changes to match the baby’s needs | Formula provides complete nutrition but does not change with the baby’s needs |
| Lower risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) | Slightly higher risk of SIDS |
| May have a lower risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes later in life | Slightly higher risk of these conditions |
As children grow, the gap becomes much smaller. Healthy food, vaccines, exercise, good healthcare, and a loving home become even more important. Breastfeeding gives babies an early advantage, but every child needs ongoing care and support to grow into a healthy adult.
