Biodiesel is a renewable fuel made from sources such as vegetable oils and animal fats. It can be blended with regular petroleum diesel and used in diesel engines.
Its main advantage is that it can replace part of the petroleum fuel without requiring diesel vehicles to replace their engines. This reduces dependence on fossil fuel and can lower greenhouse-gas emissions compared with petroleum diesel, depending on how the biodiesel is produced.
Biodiesel is not pollution-free. It still produces emissions when burned, and producing it also requires energy and resources.
Its value is in providing a renewable alternative within an existing diesel system.
In the Philippines, one important source is coconut oil. In other countries, biodiesel can come from different crops, used cooking oil, animal fats, and other feedstocks.
