Lawrence was a young Church worker in Rome in the year 258 AD. That time, the Roman government was killing many Christians. He was one of the helpers of Pope Sixtus II, and he was in charge of helping the poor and taking care of the Church’s things.
One day, the Roman leader told him to bring all the Church’s treasure. He said yes, and asked for three days.
After three days, instead of gold or money, Lawrence brought a group of poor, sick, and old people.
He pointed to the poor and said, “These are the treasures of the Church.”
The leader got angry and ordered him to be killed—by fire. They tied him to a big metal grill and roasted him alive.
But while he was burning, Lawrence made a joke: “Turn me over… I’m done on this side.”
Because of that joke, he became known as the Patron Saint of Comedians. Even while suffering, he showed faith, courage—and a little bit of humor.
His feast day is celebrated every August 10… a day to honor his courage, his wit, and thankfully, without the roasting. 🔥
