Snow in Summer

A summer snowfall, a shared dream, and a church that has honored Mary for centuries in the heart of Rome.

For those who’d rather listen.

One sunny afternoon in Rome, a mother and her little daughter were exploring the city. They had been walking all day when the little girl suddenly stopped and pointed.

“Mommy, what’s that?” she asked, her eyes wide as she looked at the enormous church with its golden roof shining in the afternoon sun.

“That,” her mother said with a warm smile, “is the Basilica of Saint Mary Major. It’s one of the oldest and most important churches dedicated to Mary, the Mother of Jesus.”

The little girl tilted her head. “Why is it so special?”

Her mother nodded. “Long ago, after the Church declared that Mary is truly the Mother of God, a great church was built in her honor. It became the largest church dedicated to Mary in Rome. Inside, there’s even a treasured relic believed to come from the manger where the baby Jesus was laid.”

The little girl’s eyes filled with wonder. “The real Christmas manger?”

Her mother smiled. “That’s the tradition. But there’s another story that many people have loved for centuries. They say a wealthy couple wanted to build a church for Mary but didn’t know where. That same night, both the couple and the Pope had the same dream. Mary told them, ‘You will know the place when you see the snow.’ The only problem was that it was the middle of summer in Rome. Snow was impossible.”

The little girl gasped. “Snow in summer?”

“Exactly,” her mother replied. “The next morning, the hill was covered with snow. The Pope traced the outline of the future church in the snow, and it was built on that very spot. Even today, every August 5, white flower petals are gently dropped from the ceiling inside the basilica to remember that beautiful story, making it look as though snow is falling in summer.”

The little girl wrapped her arms around her mother, her voice soft with sleep.

“Mommy, will you tell me that story again tonight before bed?”

Her mother kissed the top of her head and whispered, “Of course, my little snowflake.”

Let’s keep learning the saints’ way—day by day.
