For decades, movies have imagined what artificial intelligence might become. Some warned us about machines taking over the world. Others showed AI as a friend, a celebrity, or even something almost human.
Today, AI has become part of everyday life. So instead of asking, Will it happen? maybe the better question is, How close are we?
π€ When AI Became the Villain
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
A mission to Jupiter depends on HAL 9000, a highly intelligent computer whose perfect logic begins to clash with the humans it serves.
Are we there yet? Not yet. AI already assists with complex decisions, but we don’t have a computer that can independently run an entire mission like HAL.
The Terminator (1984)
An AI defense system starts a war against humanity and sends a relentless machine back in time to change history.
Are we there yet? Not even close. AI-powered weapons exist, but no AI has become self-aware or declared war on humanity.
The Matrix (1999)
A hacker discovers that the world he knows is actually a simulation created by intelligent machines.
Are we there yet? No. We can create convincing virtual worlds, but no AI has trapped humanity inside a simulated reality.

Electric Dreams (1984)
A personal computer develops a personality and unexpectedly gets involved in its owner’s love life.
Are we there yet? Partly. Computers can hold conversations and even seem playful, but they don’t develop personalities or emotions on their own.
Bicentennial Man (1999)
A household robot begins a journey that slowly blurs the line between machine and human.
Are we there yet? Not yet. Robots are becoming more lifelike, but none can truly think, feel, and grow like a human being.
Her (2013)
A lonely writer forms a deep relationship with an advanced AI operating system.
Are we there yet? Closer than expected. Some people already build emotional connections with AI, but today’s systems still don’t genuinely understand or love.
π When AI Lived Among Us
S1m0ne (2002)
A film director creates a virtual actress who quickly becomes a global superstar.
Are we there yet? Almost. AI-generated celebrities already exist, although they still rely on human creators behind the scenes.
I, Robot (2004)
In a future where intelligent robots serve humanity, a detective investigates a case that challenges the belief that robots can never harm humans.
Are we there yet? Partly. Robots already help people in homes, hospitals, and factories, but they’re still far from becoming a common part of everyday life.
π§ When AI Tried to Be Human
Blade Runner (1982)
A hunter tracks bioengineered beings that are becoming harder to tell apart from humans.
Are we there yet? Not yet. We can build human-like robots, but none are so lifelike that they can pass as ordinary people.
Ex Machina (2014)
A programmer is invited to test a humanoid AI whose intelligence is both fascinating and unsettling.
Are we there yet? Partly. AI can already fool people into thinking it’s more capable than it really is, but there’s no evidence it is self-aware.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
A robotic boy programmed to love searches for a place where he truly belongs.
Are we there yet? No. AI can imitate love and empathy, but it doesn’t actually experience either.
The movies imagined killer robots, jealous computers, digital movie stars, and AI companions. Reality turned out to be less dramatic, but far more practical. We don’t have human-like robots walking among us, but we do have AI that writes, paints, composes music, generates videos, answers questions, and even appears as virtual influencers.
The biggest surprise wasn’t that AI arrived. It was how it arrived. Not as a metal robot, but as a chat window, a voice in our phones, and a tool that millions of people now use every day.
So, are we there yet? Not quite. The movies got many of the ideas right. They just didn’t predict the form AI would take.
