Cows are often seen as boring animals: standing around, eating grass, chewing slowly, and occasionally going āmoo.ā But there is much more happening behind those calm faces than we usually notice.
š They can have best friends. Cows can form close bonds with other cows and may feel stressed when separated from familiar companions.
š They have different personalities. Some are curious and friendly, while others are quieter or more cautious.
š§ They can learn and remember. They can recognize familiar cows and people, learn routines, and remember places.
š Their vision is surprisingly wide. The position of their eyes gives them a view of almost everything around them, helping them stay alert.
š Their sense of smell is strong. They use their noses to explore and understand their surroundings.
š„¬ They don’t have four stomachs. They have one stomach divided into four compartments:
š¹ Rumen: where food is broken down with the help of tiny organisms.
š¹ Reticulum: helps move and sort the food.
š¹ Omasum: takes in water and some nutrients from the food.
š¹ Abomasum: the part that works most like our stomach, using acids and digestive juices to break down food.
š They chew their food again. After swallowing, they can bring partly digested food back up and chew it again. This helps them get more nutrients from plants.
š£ Their moos can mean different things. They may moo when hungry, separated from others, distressed, or looking for company.
