Matthias was the apostle chosen to replace Judas Iscariot—the one who betrayed Jesus and later killed himself. The disciples prayed for guidance, then cast lots, and Matthias was chosen to complete the Twelve again. Quiet entrance, giant role. Like a silent backup player suddenly called into the finals lineup.
Unlike many apostles, almost nothing certain is known about his earlier life. Tradition says he preached the Gospel in different regions like Judea, Cappadocia, and possibly Ethiopia. Many old artworks show him holding an axe or halberd because tradition says he was martyred that way.
One cool thing about Saint Matthias: he wasn’t one of the better-known Twelve during Jesus’ public ministry, but he stayed faithful in the background. Then one day, history called his name. Funny thing is, that pattern still repeats today. Some of the most important people are rarely the loudest ones in the room.
