Roch grew up in Montpellier, France, in the 14th century. According to traditional accounts, he was the only son of a local governor and came from a wealthy family. He had money, status, and a comfortable future waiting for him.
Then his parents died.
Roch could have stayed and lived a life of wealth and privilege. Instead, he gave away his wealth, dressed as a pilgrim, and left Montpellier.
His faith was behind that choice. He believed life was not just about keeping what we have, but about giving what we can.
While Roch was on pilgrimage, the plague was spreading across Europe. He went to places where people were sick and helped care for them in hospitals and towns.
Then he caught the plague himself.
So, did Roch make the right choice?
If success means money, power, and a family name, then his life does not look very successful. He died young, far from the comfortable life he could have had.
He cared for people who were suffering when he could have chosen comfort instead.
What looked like a loss was not really a loss at all.
