How to Be Rich

What if we have been thinking about wealth the wrong way all along?

Most of us want to be rich. And while there may be no quick way to get there, there are choices we can make throughout our lives that slowly add up.

Here are some ways we can start.

1. Practice Charity and Generosity

We do not need to have a lot before we can give. When we have something to spare, we can share it with someone who has less. We can also give our time and attention to people who need them.

Not everything we have has to be kept for ourselves.

2. Love Our Neighbor

The people around us will not always be easy to love. We will have differences, disagreements, and moments when patience runs thin.

Still, we can treat others with dignity and care, help when we can, and be there when someone needs us. Sometimes simply making another person’s burden a little lighter is already worth something.

3. Show Mercy and Forgive

People will disappoint us, just as we sometimes disappoint others.

We can choose compassion instead of rushing to judgment. We can try to understand before we condemn. And when we are able, we can forgive without pretending that nothing happened or allowing someone to continue hurting us.

We do not have to carry every offense forever.

4. Be Willing to Sacrifice

Doing what is right sometimes costs us something.

It may cost us time, comfort, convenience, an opportunity, or something we wanted for ourselves. There are moments when we have to choose between what benefits us and what we know is right.

Not every gain makes us richer, and not every loss makes us poorer.

5. Use Our Gifts Well

We all have something we can put to good use.

Our abilities, time, knowledge, resources, and opportunities can serve a purpose beyond ourselves. We do not all have the same gifts, but we can make something good out of what has been placed in our hands.

What we have matters. What we do with it matters too.

6. Hold Worldly Things Lightly

There will always be something more to want.

We can enjoy the good things we have without allowing them to become the center of our lives. Having more is not always the same as living better, and what we own should never end up owning us.

Knowing when we have enough gives us more room to appreciate, share, and focus on what lasts.

7. Keep the Faith

Faith is not only for the easy days.

We can hold on to it when life becomes uncertain, when answers do not come quickly, and when the road ahead is difficult to understand.

We may not always see where we are being led, but we can continue to trust.

8. Make Time for Prayer

Life can get noisy, and it is easy to become occupied with everything we need to do. Prayer gives us time to step away from that noise, speak to God, listen, give thanks, and ask for guidance.

Even a few quiet moments can help us remember what matters most.

9. Seek God’s Will

We make many plans for our lives, but not everything will go according to them.

We can ask for guidance, remain open to where God may be leading us, and learn to trust even when we cannot see the whole road ahead.

Sometimes the direction of our lives matters more than how quickly we get where we are going.

10. Love God

At the heart of everything is our relationship with God.

We can love Him not only through prayer or words, but through the way we live, the choices we make, and the love we show to others.

If we keep living this way throughout our lives, we may build quite a fortune.

Just not here on earth.

“Lay not up to yourselves treasures on earth: where the rust, and moth consume, and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up to yourselves treasures in heaven: where neither the rust nor moth doth consume, and where thieves do not break through, nor steal. For where thy treasure is, there is thy heart also.” (Matthew 6:19–21)
