When Hope Starts to Fade

Even when life seems quiet, some things are still worth holding on to.

“Nasa Diyos ang awa, nasa tao ang gawa.”

“God’s mercy belongs to God. The work belongs to us.” In other words, God gives grace, but we still have to do our part.

The saying reminds us to pray, but also to act. The balance sounds simple until life becomes complicated.

Sometimes we do everything we can. We send applications, attend interviews, save money, seek advice, and keep trying. At the same time, we pray. Some of us even finish one novena after another, hoping this time the answer will come.

Then… nothing.

After enough disappointments, frustration begins to grow. We may stop trying because we feel exhausted. We may stop praying because we feel unheard. Eventually, both action and prayer begin to fade.

That feeling is understandable. Waiting is difficult, especially when we cannot see that anything is changing.

But perhaps the old saying still has something to teach us.

Doing our part does not guarantee the outcome we hope for. Sometimes a door stays closed no matter how hard we knock. Sometimes an answer never arrives in the way we expected. Life rarely explains why.

Still, our efforts are not meaningless. They shape our character, strengthen our patience, and prepare us for paths we cannot yet see. In the same way, prayer is not valuable only when it brings the answer we hope for. It also keeps our connection with God alive, especially during seasons when hope feels quiet.

None of us can explain every unanswered prayer or every closed door. But even when we feel disappointed, we do not have to end our conversation with God.

We can keep doing what we can. We can rest when we need to. We can begin again when we are ready. And if we run out of words, we can simply remain in God’s presence.

Sometimes, the greatest answer is not found in getting everything we ask for, but in staying close to the One who continues to listen, even when our song has grown quiet.

A prayer a day, keeps the soul from drifting away.
