Music is not cheap.
But sometimes, we treat it like it is.
Here are some things that can make music look cheap in people’s eyes:
• Music is everywhere. Millions of songs are available instantly. When something is always around, people can start seeing it as ordinary rather than something valuable.
• Streaming changed ownership into access. With a record, cassette, CD, or downloaded album, you had something you could keep. Streaming gives you access without giving you something to hold or keep. That can make music feel more like a service than something you own.
• Ads can make music feel free. On ad-supported services, people can listen without paying directly. Even though the service is being paid for through advertising, the music itself can feel like it costs nothing.
• Music is treated like content. A song can become a background track, a 30-second clip, or part of a trend. When music mainly supports other content, the music itself can feel less important.
• Short videos reduce songs to moments. When only the catchiest few seconds matter, the rest of the song can feel disposable. Music becomes something to sample rather than experience.
• Music becomes background noise. We listen while scrolling, working, exercising, driving, or doing something else. When music gets little attention, it can also get little value.
• Every song competes for attention. With countless new songs appearing every day, people have less reason to stay with one. If it does not grab them immediately, another song is already waiting.
• People judge music too quickly. A few seconds can be enough to decide that a song is “bad.” Quick judgment makes music easier to dismiss before it has a chance to grow on someone.
• The work behind music is invisible. People hear three minutes but rarely see the years of learning, practicing, writing, rehearsing, and recording behind them. When the work is invisible, its value can be easy to overlook.
• Music is seen as just a hobby. Some people assume musicians make music simply for fun. When a musician is seen as a hobbyist, the music can be treated like a hobby project instead of serious creative work.
Without music, the world would no longer feel fully alive… And that’s not cheap.
