Theobald of Marly was a 13th-century French Cistercian monk and abbot of Vaux-de-Cernay. Born into a noble family around 1200, he trained as a knight before choosing monastic life. He died in 1247. Some stories about his life come from religious tradition rather than modern historical records.
One More Night
A novice wanted to leave the monastery. Theobald tried to convince him to stay, but nothing worked. He asked the young man to wait one more night.
That night, Theobald prayed for him.
By morning, the novice had changed his mind and stayed.
A Prayer for the Royal Couple
King Louis IX of France and Queen Margaret of Provence asked Theobald to pray for them as they hoped for a child.
Theobald prayed for them and encouraged them to trust God.
Margaret later became a mother. She and Louis eventually had eleven children, and the royal family remained close to Theobald.
Saint Theobald lived centuries ago, but prayer is not something that belongs only to stories of saints.
