It was around 257 AD, in Rome.
A Christian boy, probably 12 to 15 years old, was walking through the streets bringing the Eucharist to Christians imprisoned for their faith.
Some young people approached him and asked him to join them. They were pagans, and when he refused, they became suspicious of what he was carrying.
They tried to take it from him.
When they discovered that he was carrying the Eucharist, the attack became violent. They kicked him and threw stones at him, but he refused to surrender it.
He died from his injuries, still clutching the Eucharist.
The boy was Tarcisius, a young Christian who lived during the persecution under Emperor Valerian.
Today, the world is deeply attached to things that compete for its attention: money, possessions, status, success, technology, and approval, things that can be bought, lost, replaced, or forgotten.
Saint Tarcisius died protecting the Eucharist because he believed he was protecting Christ Himself.
