Peter Julian Eymard was born in 1811 in La Mure, France. He grew up in a simple family, became a priest, and later founded the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament. He spent his life helping people rediscover something he believed many had forgotten: Jesus is truly present in the Holy Eucharist.
His love for the Eucharist started when he was still a child.
He wanted to be as close to Jesus as possible. He once slipped into the sanctuary and sat near the altar. When his sister found him and asked what he was doing there, he simply answered that he wanted to be closer to Jesus. Even as a child, the church was not just a building for him. It felt like home.
His father wanted him to become a blacksmith and continue the family business. Peter tried to obey, but his heart kept pulling him back to church. He dreamed of becoming a priest. It was not an easy road. His father resisted, and Peter also struggled with poor health. More than once, it looked like his dream would end before it even began. But he never gave up.
After becoming a priest, Father Peter spent long hours praying before the Blessed Sacrament. For him, those silent moments were never empty. They were where strength, peace, and love quietly grew.
As he prayed, Father Peter realized that many Catholics had lost a deep appreciation for the Eucharist. So he preached, wrote, and founded the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament, inviting people to spend time with Jesus in Eucharistic adoration, not because they had to, but because they wanted to.
Looking at his life, it’s easy to see that the Eucharist was not just something Father Peter believed in. It was the center of everything he did. Every struggle, every prayer, every sermon, and every step he took led people closer to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Just as Saint Peter Julian Eymard said, “The Holy Eucharist is everything, because from the Holy Eucharist, everything is.”
