What We Water in the Heart

Every small choice shapes who we become. What grows inside us today will shape tomorrow.

Parang iba ang takbo ng mundo ngayon.

Hindi dahil mas “bad” ang kabataan. In fact, most kids today are still kind, creative, funny, at mas open sa iba’t ibang ideas kaysa noon. But at the same time, may napapansin din tayong ibang reality. Mas mabilis uminit ang ulo. Mas mababa ang patience. Mas madaling masaktan, at minsan, mas madaling manakit.

How did we get here?

Siguro hindi ito dahil sa isang bagay lang. It’s like tiny cracks that slowly become one big crack.

Life today is louder. School pressure. Family problems. Social media. Notifications. Comparisons. Likes. Shares. Opinions. Everything is moving fast, but our hearts are not built to run at that speed all the time.

Dati, kapag nag-away ang magkaklase, may chance na humupa ang init ng ulo pag-uwi. Ngayon, arguments don’t always end when the school bell rings. They continue in group chats, comments, and posts. Kahit gusto mong magpahinga, nandyan pa rin.

Then there’s loneliness.

Funny, no? We have thousands of ways to connect, but many people still feel alone. You can have hundreds of followers and still feel like nobody really knows you. Kapag walang mapagsabihan ng galit, takot, o lungkot, those feelings don’t disappear. They pile up.

Perhaps that’s why patience is becoming rare.

We are learning how to react faster, but not always how to understand better. Sometimes we’re so busy preparing our reply that we forget to listen.

Kids don’t learn only from teachers. They learn from parents, friends, YouTube, TikTok, games, movies, influencers, and yes… from us adults too. Every day, they’re watching how we handle anger, disappointment, and conflict.

If we answer everything with shouting, insults, or revenge, they might start believing that’s just how life works.

The heart is like a garden. Whatever we water every day will eventually grow. If we keep watering anger, pride, and bitterness, don’t be surprised when they bloom. But if we water kindness, self-control, forgiveness, and respect, those will grow too.

The real challenge today isn’t building smarter kids.

It’s helping raise kinder hearts.

One of the simplest ways to protect our hearts is to stay close to God through prayer. A few quiet moments with Him each day can slowly change the way we think, speak, and treat other people.

Because a strong mind can build amazing things.

But only a good heart knows how to use that strength well.
