Born in 1910 in Skopje, now the capital of North Macedonia, Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu began to feel a calling to religious life and missionary work around the age of 12. She would later become known as Saint Teresa of Calcutta.
At 18, she left home and joined the Sisters of Loreto. In 1929, she arrived in India and spent years teaching in Calcutta.
Her life changed in 1946. While traveling by train to Darjeeling, she experienced what she called a “call within a call.” She believed she was being asked to leave teaching and serve the poorest people directly.
In 1948, she received permission to leave the convent. She began teaching children, caring for the sick, and staying with people who were abandoned or dying.
In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity, which eventually became a worldwide mission.
For Mother Teresa, charity was more than giving money or material things. It meant giving time, attention, comfort, and dignity.
She did not merely give charity.
She gave her life to it.
Let’s keep learning the saints’ way—day by day.
