August 10 has an unexpectedly fun connection to Snoopy.
It is World Lion Day, a day that calls attention to the protection of lions and the threats they face in the wild. It is also the day traditionally celebrated as Snoopy’s birthday.
Speaking of birthdays, lion cubs are born blind. Their eyes usually open after about a week. They are also born with spotted coats that help them blend into their surroundings while they are young.
And Snoopy has actually been a lion before.
In a Peanuts strip published on May 3, 1956, Snoopy imagines himself as a fierce lion, moving through the grass and stalking his prey. But when the moment comes, his gentle side wins. He simply cannot bring himself to kill anything.
Three years later, on November 29, 1959, Snoopy takes on another lion identity, this time as a mountain lion. He sneaks through the grass and prepares to pounce on Charlie Brown, completely lost in his imaginary role.
The real lion has the roar.
Snoopy has the imagination.
And apparently, that imagination included being a lion.
