Friends Are There

The people who know us well often meet us in places the rest of the world never sees.

Friendship rarely needs a big occasion. Much of it happens in ordinary conversations, shared meals, and familiar company.

Martha, Mary, and Lazarus were siblings who lived in Bethany, a village near Jerusalem. They were close friends of Jesus, and the Gospel plainly says that He loved them.

Jesus was welcome in their home. The Gospels give us glimpses of their time together: Martha serving, Mary listening, Lazarus sharing the table with Jesus.

Then Lazarus became sick.

His sisters sent Jesus a short message: “Lord, the one you love is sick.”

By the time Jesus arrived, Lazarus had died. Martha went to meet Him. Mary came later in tears. Seeing their grief, Jesus wept.

Lazarus would soon walk out of the tomb, but the tears came first.

Friends understand that. We cannot fix every problem or change what happened. Friendship does not depend on having the right answer.

Later, they shared a dinner again. Lazarus was back at the table. Martha was serving. Mary was there. Jesus was among them.

Good friends become part of the rhythm of our lives. They share the meal, hear the bad news, sit through the difficult part, and return when there is something worth celebrating.

The greatest thing a friend brings may not be an answer, a miracle, or perfect words.

A friend is simply there.

Let’s keep learning the saints’ way—day by day.
