World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly • July 26
Getting old changes a lot of things.
Walking gets slower. Hearing gets tricky. A name can disappear for a minute, then suddenly come back while doing something else. And sometimes, the TV volume reaches a level the whole neighborhood can enjoy.
Behind those changes is a person who has raised a family, paid bills, solved problems, made mistakes, laughed, worried, and lived through years we only know from stories.
These days, they may need help with things they once did without thinking.
Ask about the old days. Let them tell that favorite story again. Help with the phone. Play an old song and see what memories come with it. Sometimes the smallest moments are the ones that matter.
“I will never forget you” is more than a beautiful line from Isaiah. We can make it real in ordinary ways.
We do not have to do something grand for our grandparents and elderly loved ones.
Sometimes, the best way to say “I haven’t forgotten you” is simply to show up.
