The Real Monster

September 15 in Hawkins. Not all monsters lurk in the Upside Downโ€”some are real, and the kids just found out about one.

Stranger things happen on World Lymphoma Awareness Day

September 15. Hawkins, Indiana. It looked like just another ordinary dayโ€”until Mike slapped a flyer onto the basement table.

โ€œItโ€™s World Lymphoma Awareness Day,โ€ he announced. โ€œI saw it on the school bulletin board.โ€ The lime green ribbon on the paper glowed under the lampโ€™s light.

Dustin leaned forward, squinting. โ€œLymphomaโ€ฆ sounds like a Demogorgonโ€™s cousin. Big head, tiny arms?โ€

Lucas groaned. โ€œItโ€™s not a monster, Dustin. Itโ€™s blood cancer. It attacks your lymph nodes.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ Dustin straightened up, suddenly serious. โ€œWell, still a monsterโ€ฆ just the real-life kind.โ€

Eleven spoke quietly, but her voice carried weight. โ€œHarder to fight than any monster. But not impossible.โ€

Dustin tapped his cap. โ€œSo what are the signs? Glowing green eyes? Tentacles? Drool?โ€

Mike rolled his eyes. โ€œNo, Dustin. Night sweats, fever, weight loss, swollen neck. Things people ignore until itโ€™s too late.โ€

Dustin clutched his neck dramatically. โ€œWaitโ€”swollen neck? After three burgersโ€ฆ am I dying?!โ€

Lucas laughed. โ€œThat was just ketchup clogging your arteries.โ€

Everyone chuckled, even Eleven. Then she lifted the flyer like it was a battle plan. โ€œPeople need to know. If they see the signs early, they can fight.โ€

Dustin grinned. โ€œSo Iโ€™m basically awarenessโ€”annoying but useful.โ€

Mike smiled. โ€œExactly. Today weโ€™re not saving Hawkins. Weโ€™re saving livesโ€”with knowledge.โ€

Elevenโ€™s eyes were steady as she spoke the last words: โ€œWe fight together.โ€

And thatโ€™s the real mission behind this yearโ€™s theme: Recognize the Signs, Save a Life.
