The Algorithmic Turn

For those whoโ€™d rather listen.

Early 2000s to early 2010s, teen social media use wasnโ€™t treated as a crisis. Why?

Because social media back then was mostly chronological and simpler.

When you opened Facebook around 2008โ€“2012, you saw posts in order. Same with early Instagram. You followed people you knew. You posted. You left.

No heavy algorithm deciding what keeps you hooked.

Then the system began to shift.

โ€ข 2012 โ€“ YouTube already had revenue sharing earlier, but influencer culture began accelerating.
โ€ข 2013โ€“2014 โ€“ Instagram influencers started becoming commercial. Sponsored posts became common.

Monetization was becoming visible. Attention was slowly turning into income.

Around 2012โ€“2014, platforms also began moving away from chronological feeds toward algorithm-driven systems. Engagement became the goal, not connection.

2016 was a turning point.

The focus on engagement deepened. Reach mattered. Time spent mattered.

By 2018โ€“2019, the creator economy exploded. Platforms formalized creator funds and revenue programs.

In 2018, the Cambridge Analytica scandal became public. It exposed how social media data could be harvested and used to build psychological profiles for political targeting. That raised serious questions about privacy, manipulation, and how platforms were handling user data.

Then came short-form dopamine machines like TikTok around 2018โ€“2020. Highly personalized systems. Endless scroll. Micro-reward loops. Fast emotional spikes.

โ€ข 2020 onward โ€“ Full creator economy era. Short-form monetization, brand deals, platform payouts.

Attention was no longer just engagement. It was income.

Thatโ€™s when concerns about addiction, comparison culture, attention span, and teen mental health started getting more attention.

Teens didnโ€™t suddenly change. The design did.

Early social media was like a digital bulletin board.

Modern social media is more like a casino floorโ€”lights, noise, engineered engagement.

The concern did not start with teens being online. It started when social platforms shifted from connection to algorithmic control.

Teens adapted to the platforms. The platforms evolved for profit. If there is something to fix, it is not the presence of young usersโ€”but the system that shapes what they see.

When Boo Counts as Bravo

Boo becomes bravo. Hate turns into clicks. In a world ruled by algorithms, truth sinks while profit rises.

In the age of algorithms, even a boo is just another clap.

The algorithm has become our new judge. It decides what we see, what we notice, and what we praise. Once, beauty was in the eye of the beholder. Now, beauty is in the eye of the algorithm.

The rule is simple: the more clicks, the higher it rises. It doesnโ€™t matter if itโ€™s talent or trash. Even hate counts. Even boredom counts. Thatโ€™s how something that isnโ€™t really โ€œwowโ€ turns into โ€œwawawaw.โ€ Standards donโ€™t riseโ€”they sink. Because this is not truth. Itโ€™s not like a survey where people give their real opinion. Itโ€™s only a machine counting clicks and selling it back to us as value.

At a live gig, a boo is still a boo. Online, a boo is just another click. The system smiles: โ€œThanks for the engagement.โ€ Boo becomes bravo.

And behind it all, the owner of the system doesnโ€™t care if itโ€™s light or dark, fake or real, poison or gold. As long as we stay, the ads roll and the profit climbs. Thatโ€™s the real stage.

In this world, profit is the only applause. The question is: do we keep clapping, or do we walk off the stage?

Answer? People will clap louder. Performers wonโ€™t walk off. Theyโ€™ll just hunt for another stage.

And in the end, this world is the real loser.
