The Youth Days of Saint Jane Frances de Chantal

Before becoming a religious founder, she was a young woman learning faith, courage, and responsibility.

Jane Frances Fremyot was born in 1572 in Dijon, Burgundy, France. Frances. Her father, Benigne Fremyot, was president of the Parliament of Burgundy. Her mother died when Jane was only eighteen months old.

Jane grew up in a prominent and well-off Catholic family. Raised by her father, she received a good education. Accounts describe her as lively, intelligent, cheerful, and strong-willed.

As a girl, she took her faith seriously. Traditional accounts tell of her refusing to compromise her Catholic beliefs when they were challenged.

She also learned responsibility early. When her sister married, Jane took charge of the household, overseeing its servants, workers, and daily needs.

In 1592, she married Baron Christophe de Chantal. At Bourbilly, Jane Frances de Chantal became a wife and mother, managed the household, cared for the poor, and restored daily Mass at the estate. Years later, after becoming a widow, she became a nun and founded the Visitation with Saint Francis de Sales.

Young people can be saints too, not someday, but in the way they live these years: what they choose, what they stand for, how they treat others, and what they do with the life God has given them.

Saint Jane Frances de Chantal was once young too. What she did with those years became part of the saint she would become.

Let’s keep learning the saints’ way—day by day.
