A teacher who helped us learn to read. A nurse who cared for a loved one. A firefighter who answered an emergency call. A sanitation worker who helped keep the community clean.
We rarely remember a system. We remember the people who helped us.
Many of these workers perform their duties quietly. They may never receive awards or become famous. Yet communities depend on those who show up each day to teach, heal, protect, assist, maintain, and serve.
When people hear the words “public service,” they often think of offices, forms, and long lines. But public service is really about people serving people.
On United Nations Public Service Day, we celebrate not only institutions but the individuals behind them. Many of us would not be where we are today without their dedication. A reassuring voice during an emergency, a patient explanation at a government office, or a helping hand during a difficult time can leave an impression that stays with us, much like a song we never quite forget.
