Tuna: What Kind of Fish Is It?

Tuna is more than what we open from a can—it is a fast-moving fish that carries both value and limits.

Many people think tuna is just canned fish. But tuna is not just something you open with a can opener. It is a group of fish that live in the open sea.

These fish are built to move. Tuna do not stay still. They keep swimming most of the time. Their bodies are smooth and shaped for speed, allowing them to travel long distances without slowing down. Some can swim up to 70 km/h, which is why their name came from an old word that means “to rush.”

There are several kinds of tuna. Bluefin is the largest and most powerful. Yellowfin is common in markets. Albacore is known for its lighter meat in canned tuna. Skipjack is the most widely used for canned products because it grows faster and is easier to catch.

Tuna meat is firm and rich in protein. It also contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are good for the heart. Because of this, tuna has become one of the most important fish in the world for food.

Tuna is also high in purines. Purines are natural compounds that the body needs. They are part of DNA and RNA, help produce energy, and support cell growth and repair. The body also makes its own purines, not just from food.

When the body breaks down purines, they turn into uric acid. In normal amounts, this is fine. But too much uric acid can build up and cause joint pain. This can lead to gout, especially for people who are sensitive to it. This is why tuna is best eaten in moderation for those at risk.

Not all tuna are in the same condition. Bluefin tuna has been heavily overfished in many areas because of high demand. Other types like skipjack are still more stable, but they also need proper management to avoid the same problem.

The way tuna is caught also matters. Some fishing methods are more careful and reduce harm to other sea animals. Others can accidentally catch dolphins, turtles, and other fish, which affects balance in the ocean.

In simple terms, tuna is a group of fast, strong fish that people rely on for food. It is simple to understand, but important to take care of.
