Many people know Saint Anthony as the saint people pray to when something is lost. Yet his life was about much more than helping people find missing things.

Anthony was a Franciscan friar and priest who lived from 1195 to 1231. Born in Lisbon, Portugal, he spent much of his ministry preaching in Italy, where he became known for his deep knowledge of Scripture and his concern for ordinary people. Nearly 800 years after his death, he remains one of the most beloved saints in the Catholic Church.

In northern Italy, he spoke openly against greed and dishonest business practices. Wealthy lenders could trap poor families in debt until they lost their property, their livelihood, or their future. He did not stay silent. He challenged those who became rich at the expense of others and urged them to treat people fairly.

Accounts from his time tell of people returning stolen goods or repaying debts after hearing his sermons. He understood that charity alone could not solve every problem. Giving bread to a hungry person was good. Returning what had been unjustly taken from them was even better. He encouraged wrongdoers to repair the harm they had caused.

Many ordinary people listened because they recognized their own struggles in his words.

He did not spend all his time speaking to scholars, nobles, or the powerful. He preached to workers, merchants, farmers, and the poor. He explained the Gospel in ways ordinary people could understand.

A hungry person needs bread. A person burdened by injustice needs justice.
