A Cheerful Heart Is Good Medicine

Some verses are meant to be read quietly. Others seem to smile back.

Every smile has a story behind it. Some come from friendship, some from relief after difficult days, and some arrive quietly in moments of gratitude.

The Bible shows that joy, gladness, and laughter all have a place in human life.

Ecclesiastes says:

“There is a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance.” (Ecclesiastes 3:4)

Proverbs goes even further:

“A cheerful heart is good medicine.” (Proverbs 17:22)

The story of Sarah also includes laughter. After giving birth to Isaac in her old age, she declared:

“God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” (Genesis 21:6)

The Psalms likewise speak of laughter as an expression of joy and thanksgiving:

“Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy.” (Psalm 126:2)

Throughout Scripture, laughter often appears alongside joy, thanksgiving, and moments of unexpected blessing.

From Sarah’s laughter to the songs of the Psalms, Scripture leaves room for smiles as well as tears, for celebration as well as sorrow. Like music, life moves through different notes and seasons, and among them is the sound of laughter.

Perhaps that is why a cheerful heart remains good medicine, even today.
