Mario Day

March 10 is known as Mario Day because “Mar10” looks like Mario.

Mario Day is celebrated every March 10. The reason is simple but clever. Write the date as Mar 10, and it looks like Mario. Mar10 → Mario.

The idea started among fans of the character from the Super Mario Bros. game series. Over time it grew bigger, and eventually Nintendo itself began recognizing the day and joining the celebration.

Mario first appeared in 1981 in the arcade game Donkey Kong, created by Shigeru Miyamoto. At that time he was not even called Mario yet. His early name was Jumpman.

In 1985, Mario became the star of Super Mario Bros., a game that helped define what a platform game is. It became one of the most influential video games ever made and helped launch the Nintendo Entertainment System into homes around the world.

Since then, Mario has appeared in racing games, sports games, party games, and many adventure titles. Over the decades he has become one of the most recognizable characters in gaming.

Some basic facts about Mario are widely known.

• Mario is officially a plumber from Brooklyn.
• His brother is Luigi.
• His longtime rival is Bowser.
• The princess he often rescues is Princess Peach.

What started as a small fan observation about the calendar eventually turned into a widely recognized celebration of one of gaming’s most famous characters.
