Adam and Eve—Are They Saints?

Why the Church honors Adam and Eve as saints in early Christian tradition.

Yes. In Catholic tradition, Adam and Eve are honored as saints.

Not through a formal canonization. That system did not exist yet. This recognition comes from the earliest layers of Church memory.

They are honored for a simpler reason.

They fell.
They repented.
They were not cut off from God’s plan.

The Church believes that Christ’s saving work reaches back to the very beginning of humanity. Redemption does not start partway through history. It starts at the start. Adam and Eve are part of that redemption.

Their names appear in the Roman Martyrology, the Church’s official list of saints and blessed remembered throughout the liturgical year. They are traditionally commemorated on December 24, the day before Christmas. The timing is deliberate. The first humans are remembered just before the birth of the Savior.

Adam and Eve were not saints because they were perfect. They were saints because failure was not the end of their story.
