Third Sunday of Advent • 14 December 2025
The Third Sunday of Advent marks the midpoint of the season. This week introduces the theme of joy, shown by the lighting of the pink candle. Its color signals a shift as the celebration of Christ’s coming draws nearer.
The Advent wreath reflects this moment clearly. Two violet candles continue the call to preparation, while the pink candle stands for the joy that grows when a person trusts the nearness of the Lord. Each candle adds light to the season and shows how Advent moves forward week by week.
This Sunday is also called Gaudete Sunday, taken from the first word of a traditional Latin chant meaning “Rejoice.” It’s the only Advent Sunday with a special name, marking the single intentional lift in tone during the season.
The focus of this Sunday is simple: recognize God’s work in the present moment and carry the days ahead with a quiet, steady joy.
