The Saint Who Couldn’t Hide from His Calling

Some people run from greatness, but it always finds them—quietly, and sometimes loudly.

Saint Martin of Tours

Martin lived in the 4th century. He once served as a soldier, but he left the army to live simply as a monk—praying, helping the poor, and avoiding attention. When people wanted him to become bishop of Tours, he refused, believing others were more deserving.

But one legend says he tried to hide in a barn so no one could find him. The problem? The geese inside wouldn’t stop honking. Their noise gave him away, and soon the crowd found him. He accepted the role, realizing some callings—like becoming bishop—really won’t let you hide.

Even today, people in parts of Europe eat roasted goose on his feast day, remembering that funny moment when Saint Martin of Tours learned he couldn’t escape his mission.
